Supporting Our StudentsSupporting Our Students (SOS)

October 27, 2009 (Press Release) - Support Our Students Seeks Volunteers

Supporting Our Students (SOS) is a year-long tutoring program for elementary school children that matches tutors with students who need remediation in basic literacy skills. SOS is led by certified teachers who oversee volunteers trained by Communities In Schools.

Children in need of assistance with reading and math skills are offered the chance to participate in the SOS Program throughout the school year and in the summer. Current SOS school sites include Angel Oak Elementary, Edith L. Frierson Elementary, Jennie Moore Elementary, Mitchell Elementary, and Orange Grove Elementary.

Supporting Our StudentsDuring the 2008-09 school year, 53 volunteer tutors spent 1,516 hours helping 116 students at these schools achieve the following goals:

96% of the students improved MAP test scores in language arts

95% of the students improved MAP test scores in math

94% of the students improved MAP test scores in reading
